I research how buildings resist earthquakes, and I design safe, buildable and economical buildings in Myanmar.
About
I am a PhD candidate at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), specializing in earthquake engineering, and the director of Brilliant Engineering Solutions (BES Co.,Ltd), a structural, architectural and MEP design consultancy in Yangon.
My research focuses on the soft-storey problem: buildings whose open ground floor, used for shops or parking, is much weaker than the floors above. The 2025 Myanmar earthquake showed how such buildings collapse. I study how to retrofit them with reinforced concrete infill walls, using multi-objective mathematical optimization to decide where the walls should go. My message is simple: retrofitting is not an option, it is essential.
What I learn in research goes straight into the buildings we design at BES, and on my page "A Myanmar Civil Engineer" I share it with young engineers.

Research: seismic retrofitting of irregular reinforced concrete buildings with RC infill walls, placed by multi-objective mathematical optimization. Presented as "Infill RC Wall Retrofitting for Irregular Reinforced Concrete Buildings Using Multi-objective Mathematical Optimization" at the 28th JSCE International Summer Symposium, 2026.

Master of Engineering (M.Eng.)
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) · Thailand
Thesis: An experimental study of soft-storey retrofitting of a typical reinforced concrete masonry infill frame based on numerical optimization. The retrofit removed the soft-storey effect, raised the load capacity about 10 times and the energy dissipation nearly 5 times.

Thesis: Failure analysis on portal frame structure with construction sequence, a steel warehouse in Yangon studied at each stage of erection.

JSCE Study Tour Grant (STG) 2026, Sapporo
Japan Society of Civil Engineers · Myanmar participant, selected by Fed. MES
One of seven young civil engineers from five countries invited by JSCE. Technical tours of the Civil Engineering Research Institute for Cold Region (CERI), Otaru Port and the Ishikari River flood-control works; the 2026 JSCE Annual Meeting; and an oral presentation of my doctoral research, "Infill RC Wall Retrofitting for Irregular Reinforced Concrete Buildings Using Multi-objective Mathematical Optimization", at the 28th International Summer Symposium.
I opened the talk with a soft-storey collapse from the 2025 Myanmar earthquake, with one message: retrofitting is not an option but essential.

Seismic Performance of Building Model Competition — graduate level winners
Team "Duct", AIT · supported by Computers & Structures, Inc. (CSI)
Teams from Nepal, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar built five-storey models that had to survive every shaking amplitude and frequency on the shake table. Our model separated the floor masses with cables to raise its resonance frequency, used braced truss columns to stop buckling, and dissipated energy with hand-made springs. Team Duct won the graduate level; the prizes were given at the CSI celebration in Bangkok.

Master's thesis: Experimental study of soft-storey retrofitting of an RC masonry infill frame based on numerical optimization
Full-scale frame tested with a hydraulic actuator: about 10 times the load capacity and nearly 5 times the energy dissipation after retrofitting. Click the picture to read the summary.
-
Bachelor's thesis: Failure analysis on portal frame structure with construction sequence
Showed that without temporary bracing a steel warehouse is most likely to fail at the column base during erection. Click the picture to read the summary.
